Heatstroke!!

Another 40 degree day in Melbourne and as the children prepared to jump into the pool, my dad went out to scoop up any leaves that may have fallen into the water from the wind only to find a poor little noisy miner stuck in the middle of the pool trying desperately to swim to the edge. Dad managed to scoop the poor thing up, we wrapped him in a towel and tried to calm him and give him some water – it didn’t look good for the little bird I must say – shock is a big killer of birds and this little miner was only young. We left the little bird in a cool corner and kept a eye on him from time to time. It took a while but gradually he started to move and then finally he took off. You cannot imagine how relieved we all were that the little bird had survived, hopefully he has been reunited with his Family and will go on to have many more adventures.

It is important this time of year to be extra mindful of our pets and to ensure they are not left outside in the scorching heat. We should also remember our native wildlife and leave plenty of cool fresh water around our gardens for them as well.

If you do suspect that your pet is suffering from heatstroke you must act quickly, heatstroke can kill within minutes.

I choose life

We had CPR training at work today, it is always good to have a refresher in first aid and CPR it makes you feel just that little bit more confident knowing that if the need ever did God forbid arise you would have a small idea of what to do and who knows, hopefully even be able to help save a life.

In Victoria 80% of the population is now trained in CPR this is the highest number for any state in the world. It is quite an impressive number I feel, but despite so many people being trained in CPR many people are still not willing to step in and help in an emergency we were told today. Disappointing I think.

If there is one thing that is drilled into us year after year in these refresher courses is that you should definitely have a go. If someone is not breathing by doing something you are at least giving them a chance at survival whereas by doing nothing you are effectively condemning them to certain death. I hope that if ever faced with a life or death situation that I would choose life.

What a disgrace

20140618-172845.jpg

The Herald Sun published the above article yesterday stating that from now on pet owners will not be able to go looking through the RSPCA s animal shelter/pound searching for their lost pet. They will instead have to produce a photo of said pet as proof of identity.

How ridiculous! What if the animal has been injured or groomed differently. The logic behind the RSPCA decision is that this is for the protection of the animals. How so??

This will no doubt lead to even more animals not being reclaimed, even more animals that will inevitably wind up being put down.

Black Dogs

For some reason people seem to have some misguided prejudice against black dogs. Heaven knows why, my sister has two big black dogs and they are the gentlest, sweetest, most loving dogs you could ever meet. Yet the statistics tell us that when it comes to adopting, black dogs do not fair as well as white, brown, tan or grey dogs.

So I thought I would share the top ten reasons why you should choose a black dog.

Pet shop puppies

20140530-203044.jpg

The pet shop at our local shopping centre has bought in the most adorable chubby chocolate coloured Sharpei puppies. These cute roly poly bundles of joy drew in the crowds today, and of course my twins wanted a closer look.

There is no denying that these pups were adorable, the problem is that they are without a doubt puppy farm dogs, which means that by gathering around and cooing over them we are effectively encouraging puppy farming, something that my twins are not able to comprehend just yet.

Last year this very same pet shop decided to do the right thing and have shelter dogs on offer instead of designer puppies, however the demand for these dogs was not great, and come Christmas time the cute puppies were back.

I do hope these beautiful Sharpei puppies find loving forever homes, every animal deserves that, but I also wish that people would do the right thing and send a clear message to pet shop owners everywhere. It is time to end the shameful and cruel treatment of companion animals that are suffering in puppy farms. It’s time to break the puppy trade, and the only way to do that is to stop buying puppies from Pet shops.
